The city has a total area of 3.1 square miles, of which 2.4 square miles is land and 0.8 square miles is water. The city is situated at an elevation of 1,443 feet, giving it a cooler climate than the surrounding area. It has a humid continental climate, with cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Zion Grove is home to the Evangelical Free Church of America, which is the largest non-denominational church in the state. The population of the city was 2,029 as of the 2010 census.
