Located in the southeast corner of Colorado, Yellow Jacket is located at (38.327398, -102.795903). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land.

Although the area now known as Yellow Jacket was first settled in the late 1800s, the city's roots are in the early gold rush days when prospectors searching for gold struck pay dirt on the surrounding hills. The population of Yellow Jacket grew rapidly as miners filtered in to the area and erected cabins and stores. A post office was established in 1906 and the first school, a one-room cabin, was opened the following year. The city's first resident official was elected in 1912 and the first bank, the Bank of Yellow Jacket, opened a branch in 1914.

The population of the city peaked in 1919 at 1,823 and then began to decline as more gold was discovered in other parts of the country. The population rebounded to 1,992 in 1930, but then fell again to 1,579 in 1940. The population increased slightly to 2,029 in 1950 and then continued to rise to 2,773 in 1970. The recession of the early 1980s caused a decline in the city's population, and it bottomed out at 2,431 in 1990. The city's population has since steadily recovered, and as of the 2010 census, numbered 3,723.

As the only incorporated city in Fountain County, Yellow Jacket is the administrative center for all governmental services in the county. The city's government is composed of a mayor and five members of the city council.

The economy of Yellow Jacket is based primarily on the agricultural and tourism industries. The city is home to the Fountain County Fairgrounds, the largest fair in the state of Colorado.
