As the capital of the Ghassanid kingdom, and one of the most important cities of the former eastern Roman Empire, Yeddiss (now YedDIS) is no small town. Lying in the middle of a fertile valley in the Hasakeh region of eastern Syria, the town covers an extensive area of over 128 kmĀ² and has a population of around 176,000 people. The city is located at an altitude of 1,300 metres above sea level and enjoys a temperate climate with a moderately high annual rainfall of around 1,200 mm.

The region around Yeddiss has been inhabited for many centuries, and the first recorded settlement in the area dates back to the 4th century BC. The city's current name is thought to originate from the Semitic root yedda,meaning "a valley" or "a fertile valley". Over the centuries, Yeddiss has changed hands numerous times and has been ruled by a variety of different empires, including the Byzantine, Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates. In the late 9th century, the town came under the control of the Ghassanid dynasty, a dynasty of Arab Muslim rulers who were instrumental in expanding Islam into Europe.

The Ghassanids were a powerful Dynasty who ruled over part of Syria and Iraq in the 8th to 10th centuries. They played an important role in expanding Islam into Europe and the Eastern Roman Empire. The Ghassanid Dynasty is also notable for their patronage of arts and sciences, most notably mathematics and astronomy.

The Ghassanids were succeeded by the Fatimid dynasty in the early 11th century. However, the Ghassanid dynasty never lost their influence over Yeddiss, and the city retained its Arab character and continued to play an important role in regional affairs. In the 12th century, Yeddiss was briefly occupied by the Crusaders, but the town eventually came under the control of the Ayyubid dynasty.

Despite the relatively brief periods of occupation by the Crusaders and Ayyubids, Yeddiss played an important role in establishing ties between the Middle East and Europe. The city was home to a number of important scholars, including al- Hasan ibn al-Haytham, who is considered to be the father of modern science.

Yeddiss has seen a rapid decline in its fortunes in recent decades, as Syria has increasingly become fractured and partitioned into a number of entirely separate states. However, despite the many challenges the city faces, Yeddiss remains an important commercial and political centre in the region.
