Welcome to Wounded Knee city, located in southeastern South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Named after the Battle of Wounded Knee, December 29, 1890, which ended the Pierrepoint-Custer campaign of the Black Hills War, Wounded Knee is home to a population of around 6,000. Situated in the Black Hills Regional Area, the city is bordered by the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to the north, the city of Pine Ridge to the east, the city of Rapid City to the south, and the state of South Dakota to the west.

According to the 2010 census, Wounded Knee has a population of 6,001. The city is served by the Wounded Knee Community School District. The city is also the administrative center for three counties - Union County, Oglala County, and Pine Ridge County. The city is largely agricultural, with the mainstay industries being beef cattle production and hay production.

Wounded Knee is located in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. The city is located on the south bank of the Missouri River, just south of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The Oglala Lakota people are the predominant inhabitants of the area. The city is also home to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The reservation is the largest of the three tribes in South Dakota. The population of the reservation was estimated to be 68,000 in 2010.
