Winamac, Indiana, is located in central Indiana on U.S. Route 20 about halfway between Indianapolis and Cedar Rapids. The city has a population of about 18,000 and is part of the Lafayette, Indiana, metropolitan area.

The city's name is derived from the Potawatomi word winama, meaning "wolf place." The first Europeans to see the area were French traders in 1702, who named the stream they camped along the Wabash River "La Belle Riviere."

The city was platted in 1827 by John Johnston, and named Winamac after the Marquis de Mores, a French officer who fought in the War of 1812. The city's first business was a trading post operated by James Lockridge.

The Juniata Railroad reached the city in 1852, and the city soon developed into a trade center for the surrounding region. Winamac was incorporated as a town in 1853.
