Westside is located on the western slopes of the San Gabriel Mountains, about 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, at the junction of State Routes 210, 210S and the Angeles Freeway (State Route 10). It is bordered on the north by the city of Pasadena and on the east by the city of Glendale. The city is adjacent to the unincorporated community of Panorama City and is surrounded by the city of Long Beach to the south and east, and the city of West Hollywood to the north.

Westside geography is mostly flat, with a few rolling hills, and is home to many citrus, olive, and cattle ranches. The city is traversed by the Santa Ana River, which is also the Southern California border with the Mexican state of Baja California. The climate in Westside is relatively mild, with little extremes of weather. The average annual temperature is 52 degrees Fahrenheit, and the annual precipitation is 20 inches.

Westside was founded on October 17, 1905, when a group of businessmen and engineers established the community of West Hollywood after purchasing the Colorado Land and Cattle Company Ranch. The city's name was selected by the city's first post office, which opened on January 2, 1906. A referendum to change the city's name was passed by a 2 to 1 margin on June 25, 1906 and the name Westside became official.

Westside is economically diverse and supported by a number of large industries, including aerospace, optical devices, telecommunications, and film production.
