The city is spread out over a deeply dissected plateau that was formed during the last Ice Age. The river valleys that run through the city were carved by glaciers. The Grand River and Timiskaming Creeks run through the city, while the Black Creek and the Humber River cut through the city from east to west. Elevations in the city range from the Negaunee River at the south end of the city to the Bruce Peninsula at the north end.

Mid-winter can be quite rigorous, with heavy snowfalls and low temperatures. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures ranging from 25 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius. Thunderstorms are common in the summer. High winds can cause extensive damage in the city.
