West Chester is bordered by Montgomery County to the south and east, Delaware County to the southeast, Philadelphia County to the south and southwest, and Chester County to the west. The city is about six miles from West Chester Springs and about nineteen miles from Philadelphia.
West Chester’s geographic location has given it importance from the beginning. The city is on the eastern bank of the Schuylkill River. As early as 1682, a Dutch fort was built at the site where the West Chester Mall stands today. The river has been an important highway, military supply route, and transportation link for more than three hundred years.
West Chester has a humid subtropical climate, which is characterized by long hot summers and short, cool winters. Snowfall is a rare event, although there was a trace of snow on the ground on January 18, 2018. The monthly daily average temperature ranges from 33.2 degrees Fahrenheit in January to 78.1 degrees Fahrenheit in July.
The city’s main economic sectors are professional, scientific, and administrative services; business and financial services; health care and social assistance; and manufacturing. As of the census of 2010, there were 133,722 people, 53,845 households, and 33,332 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,462.0 people per square mile (949.3/km²). There were 58,790 housing units at an average density of 1,062.4 per square mile (410.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 80.4% White, 10.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.8% of the population.
