The city of Weleetka is one of the earlier settlements in Marshall County and is thought to have been established in 1872. The city is named after the Hidatsa chief Weleetka, who was killed by the Omaha tribe in the 1860s. Weleetka was incorporated as a city in 1920.
Weleetka is located in the southern Kansas prairies, in Marshall County. The city is bordered by Dexter to the east, Wakefield to the south, and Oregon to the west. The city is located at 33°38′N 99°7′W.
The Columbia River forms the western border of the city.
Weleetka experiences a semi-arid climate (Köppen climate classification "BSk"). This climate is characterized by hot, dry summers and cold, dry winters.
