Vest City is the most storied city in Iowa, with a rich history dating back to the early 1860s. The city was originally called Birmingham, after the Birmingham, England, of the same name. The city was platted in 1865 and named Vest in honor of Senator Timothy Vest, a strong supporter of the new city. Vest City soon became a thriving agricultural center due to the fertile soils in the area and the arrival of the railroad in 1871. The population of Vest City peaked at 1,871 in 1900, but began to decline as the industry of the 1920s moved away from rural Iowa. Vest City entered its decline as a town in the late 1960s, and by the early 2000s had only about 700 residents remaining.
Despite Vest City's decline, the city has retained its historic character and is home to a number of historic and notable buildings. The city's most prominent landmark is the luxurious Vest Hotel, built in 1882 and now a historic landmark. Other notable buildings in Vest City include the Hale County Courthouse, the Bond County Courthouse, and the Farmers National Bank. Vest City is also home to the Vest Memorial Library, which is the only public library in Hale County.
