Tuscaloosa is located in the southeastern region of Alabama, on the eastern slopes of the Appalachian Mountains. The city is bordered by the cities of Birmingham to the north, Huntsville to the northwest, Mobile to the west, and Montgomery to the south. To the east, Tuscaloosa shares a border with the city of Auburn. The Tuscaloosa River flows through the city, joining the Black Warrior River a few miles east of the city.

Tuscaloosa has a humid subtropical climate. According to the Köppen climate classification, Tuscaloosa has a humid subtropical climate, with significant mild winters and hot, moderately humid summers. The city receives about 36 inches of precipitation per year, most of which falls during the months of November, December, and February.

As of the census of 2010, there were 205,579 people residing in the city. The population density was 1,636.2 people per square mile (625.7/km²). There were 73,986 housing units at an average density of 613.5 per square mile (236.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 66.8% White, 32.2% Black or African American, .1% Native American, 1.2% Asian, .2% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. 5.9% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 73,986 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% were married couples living together, 24.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.24.

In the city, the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older.
