The Tununak city is located in the southeast part of the province of East Nusa Tenggara. It is bordered by the islands of Sumbawa and Flores to the north, the island of Bali to the east, and the district of South Flores to the south. The Tununak city was founded in the eighteenth century by the Sultanate of Bali. It served as the capital of the province of East Nusa Tenggara until the nineteenth century. The city was then moved to Kupang, and finally to Merauke in 1926.

The city is home to several important archaeological sites, including the Gunung Merapi volcano, which is one of Indonesia's most popular tourist destinations. Tununak is also known for its textile and fashion industries.
