Trussville lies at the intersection of U.S. Route 11 and U.S. Route 231. The city is bordered to the east by Birmingham, to the south by Leeds and Phenix City, and to the west by Florence. The closest state capitals are Montgomery and Tuscaloosa. The city's population was 16,657 at the 2010 census.

Trussville experiences a humid subtropical climate, typical for the southeastern United States, with mild weather year-round. The average temperature is 76 degrees Fahrenheit, although winter temperatures occasionally dip below freezing.

The first Europeans in the area were the French in the early 18th century, followed by the British in the early 19th century. In 1802, General James Wilkinson built a cabin on the site of present-day Trussville. The community was named for General Samuel Truss, the British Army engineer who designed the bridge over the river Thames that played a critical role in the battle of Waterloo.

In 1890, the Trussville Normal School opened as the first teacher training school in Alabama. The school closed in 1983, but was restored and opened as the Alabama State Fairground Museum in 1994. The Alabama State Capitol is located in the city.

Trussville's economy is based largely on the health care, education, and business services industries. The city is also home to the Trussville Area Wildlife National Wildlife Refuge and Huntsville National Military Park.
