Towson is a city located in the state of Maryland, along the Baltimore–Washington Parkway, just south of Baltimore. As of the 2010 census, the population was 209,197. Towson occupies a prominent location along the Baltimore–Washington Parkway and is home to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, the largest public university in the state of Maryland. The city is also the primary commercial and cultural center of northeast Baltimore. Towson was chartered by the Maryland General Assembly in 1789 and named for General George Washington's stepfather, Samuel Towson.

At the time of its incorporation, Towson was a small village of about 1,000 inhabitants. The area now occupied by Towson was part of the lands belonging to the Patapsco Manor. Towson grew rapidly after the opening of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1851, and by 1870 the population had increased to 10,000. Towson entered a period of rapid growth after the American Civil War, when many veterans settled in the city. The population reached 25,000 by 1885 and 50,000 by 1910. In the 1920s and 1930s, Towson emerged as a center for the light manufacturing industry.

Today, Towson is a major urban center with a diversified economy. The city is home to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and numerous other corporations. Towson is also the primary commercial and cultural center of northeast Baltimore.
