Tougaloo was founded in 1824 and named in honor of two Indian chiefs, Tougaloo and Tenskwatawa. Tougaloo gets its name from the Choctaw word "tugaloo," meaning "a large pointed nut."
Tougaloo City is located in southwest Mississippi, bordered by the Mississippi River to the south and east, the Yazoo River to the north, and the Pearl River to the west. The city is also bordered by Hinds County to the south and west. Tougaloo is located about midway between Jackson, Mississippi, and Vicksburg, Mississippi. The geographic coordinates of Tougaloo City are 33.728 degrees north latitude, -88.842 degrees west longitude.
Tougaloo City has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. As of the 2010 census, the median income for a household in the city was $49,365, and the median income for a family was $52,442. About 18.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 17.9% of those age 65 or over. Tougaloo City is the home of Tougaloo College, one of the largest historically black colleges and universities in the United States.
