Tonawanda, New York is a town located in Erie County, just west of the city of Buffalo. It is one of three municipalities in the town of Tonawanda. The population was 24,097 at the 2010 census. Tonawanda was settled in 1786 by pioneers from Massachusetts. It is the birthplace of U.S. Representative Charles E. Steen (1868-1935) and the inventor of the modern pleasure boat, George W. Adamson. The Buffalo and New York Central Railroad was the first to cross the town site, running north to south, in 1842.
