Toluca de Lerdo, the capital of the State of Mexico, is a city of major importance in the cultural and economic life of the country. Its location, in the heart of the Mexico Valley, at the confluence of the Lerdo and Bravo rivers, has endowed it with an excellent climate.

The city is located in the central eastern region of the country, in the Valley of Mexico, at the confluence of the Lerdo and Bravo rivers. It is bordered to the north by the State of Mexico, to the east by the State of Puebla, to the southeast by the State of Oaxaca, and to the west by the State of Morelos. The city has an area of 451.49 km2 and a population of 1,699,577 inhabitants in 2009.

The terrain is generally level, with rolling hills in the east and north, and the Toluca Valley, which extends from east to west for about 20 km. The western part of the city is on a higher elevation, and is characterized by broad and spacious boulevards, well-wooded hills, and numerous palaces and mansions of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The eastern part of the city is on a much lower level and is more densely populated.

The majority of the population of Toluca de Lerdo is mestizo. Spanish is the predominant language in the city, although there is a significant concentration of native speakers of Nahuatl, Mandinka, and Zapotec.

The city is home to important cultural institutions, such as the Fine Arts Museum, the Museum of History, and the Church of the Most Holy Trinity. It is also the site of the ancient city of Tollocaha and the University of Toluca.
