Terrebonne City is located in southwest Louisiana, in the parish of Terrebonne. As of the 2010 census, the population was 25,874. It is the principal city of the Terrebonne Parish and is located in the area that was once the heart of the sugarcane and cotton plantations of the Gulf South. The city presently has important industrial and commercial centers, including fertilizer and oil production and distribution, trucking, timber, and shipbuilding.

The city is centrally located in the parish and is bordered by Prairieville to the northwest, Houma to the northeast, Thibodaux to the southeast, and Riverwood to the south. The headwaters of the Atchafalaya River are located within the city limits.
