Sugar Valley is located in the southwestern corner of Iowa, inStory County. The city is bordered by the city of Marshall to the north, east, and south, and by the cities of Nevada to the west and Russell to the southeast.
Sugar Valley is located at 38 degrees 49 minutes north latitude and 98 degrees 44 minutes west longitude.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.06 square miles, all of it land.
At the 2000 census, there were 5,994 people, 2,569 households, and 1,765 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,355.5 inhabitants per square mile (513.9/km²). There were 2,868 housing units at an average density of 514.5 per square mile (198.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 2.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.81% of the population.
There were 2,569 households of which 49.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.8% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% were non-families. 16.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.27.
The median age in the city was 33.8 years. 31.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 29.5% were from 25 to 44; 24.5% were from 45 to 64; and 7.5% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.0% male and 51.0% female.

This filters out some of the blue light, making the sun look redder. At the same time, shadows get longer and darker. So by the time the sun finally dips below the horizon, darkness has already begun to fall.
Of course, not all places on Earth experience darkness at the same time. Near the equator, the sun sets and rises almost directly overhead. This means that there is less of a difference between daytime and nighttime. Closer to the poles, however, the sun stays low in the sky for much of the year.
