Steeleville was first settled in 1824 by the Holland brothers, James and Ebenezer. The brothers had migrated from New York and were looking for a place to farm. A post office was established in the community in 1848, and the city was formally incorporated in 1886.

The city is located on the banks of the Tuscola River, which was dammed in the 1990s to create a reservoir. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with ample amounts of rainfall throughout the year.
