{Starr City is an unincorporated town in Inyo County, California, United States. It is located south-southeast of Big Pine, at an elevation of 22,608 feet (6,901 m). To the east lies the Owens Valley, to the west is the Sierra Nevada, and to the north is the Inyo National Forest.
Starr City is the namesake for the John Steinbeck novel of the same name, about the relationship between a young married couple, Tom Joad and Mayella Ewell, and their extended family in north-central California during the Great Depression. The town is also the setting for the much-acclaimed 1990 film of the same name, directed by Peter Weir and starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.
Depression-era California is vividly portrayed in Steinbeck's novel, with its dust-blown towns, endless fields, and soaring mountains. Steinbeck and his character, Tom Joad, visited Inyo County, California, during the writing of the novel and made notes about the landscape and people they met. What Steinbeck created on the page is largely authentic to the Inyo County of the 1930s.
Today, much of Steinbeck's California has vanished-the towns that dot the landscape of the novel are now abandoned ghost towns. However, the small towns and landscape of Inyo County still evoke the spirit of Steinbeck's novel.
At an elevation of 22,608 feet (6,901 m), Starr City lies in the Owens Valley. This valley was once one of the most important irrigation regions in the United States and was a major supplier of crops to the cities of the Los Angeles basin. Today, the Owens Valley is a remote and rugged area, home to a number of notable attractions, including the Tenaya Lake National Forest and the Mount Whitney National Monument.
