The population was 23,652 as of the 2010 census. The city's history dates back to the early 19th century, when it was called Clinton. In 1869, the name was changed to Stanton, in honor of General Jeremiah Stanton, who had been murdered a few years earlier. Stantonville was incorporated in 1888.
