San Simon is located in the southern region of the Mexican state ofChiapas, on the eastern slope of the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. It is bordered by the municipalities ofPalenque to the north, San Cristóbal de las Casas to the northeast, and Playa del Carmen to the east and south. The municipality covers an area of 6,444 hectares and has a population of 11,307. The city is the municipal seat of the municipality.

The city is named after the founder of the Costanera Maestra, Salvador de Madariaga y Llano, Count of San Simon de Cuéllar. The city owes much of its growth to the construction of the railroad in the mid-19th century.

The elevation of the municipality ranges from 1,050 to 2,800 meters above sea level. The municipality has a tropical climate with a pronounced dry season. The average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius and the average annual rainfall is 530 millimeters.
