Rampart city is located in eastern California, in the Sacramento metropolitan area. The city is bordered on the east by the American River, on the north by the American River flood plain, on the west by the California Central Valley, and on the south by the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. It covers an area of about 9 square miles (23 km2).

With a population of about 124,000, Rampart is the fourth most populous city in the Sacramento metropolitan area. It is also the location ofCollege of the Pacific (COP), one of the leading West Coast universities. Nearby are the cities of Stockton, Modesto and Turlock.

Due to its location, Rampart experiences a warm, Mediterranean climate, with abundant sunshine and average northeast winds that keep the temperatures moderate year-round. The city gets about 6 inches (150 mm) of rainfall annually, most of which comes in the winter months.

The best way to get around Rampart is by car. The freeways that run through the city make it easy to get around. However, the city has a limited public transit system, so visitors should plan to use their cars.

There are several hotels in the city. The two most notable are the Embassy Suites and the Ramada Inn. There are also a number of restaurants, including a large buffet restaurant called World Buffet at The Promenade at Roseville, which is popular with locals and visitors.

The nearest airports are those in Sacramento and Modesto. Sacramento International Airport is about 20 miles (32 km) away and Modesto City-County Airport is about 25 miles (40 km) away.
