Puerto Real is one of the oldest and most important cities in the eastern region of the Iberian Peninsula. Puerto Real has a temperate climate with high and low temperatures throughout the year. The average temperature in January is around -3°C, while the average temperature in July is around 25°C. The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers.

The city is served by a network of highways and arterial roads. The nearest airport is the Zaragoza Airport, located some 85 km to the south-east of the city. Puerto Real is well connected by rail, with Valencia, Zaragoza and Barcelona all within a reasonable drive.

Puerto Real is well known for its medieval architecture, many of which have been declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
