Poteau is home to the Poteau River Valley Museum, which is open from Memorial Day through the first week in November. It is also the home of the Poteau Valley Rodeo, which is the oldest continuous rodeo in Oklahoma. The Poteau Valley Symphony Orchestra is also based in Poteau.

Poteau has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen "Cfa"), with hot, humid summers and mild to cold winters. Statewide average temperature means are generally above the freezing mark (32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius) from late November through early March, but below freezing temperatures are common at night or in the early morning. The highest monthly mean temperature was 102 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius) in July 1936 and the lowest was −7 degrees Fahrenheit (−22 degrees Celsius) in January 1899. Precipitation is generally below the statewide average, but there is a fair amount of it, with an average of 40.1 inches (1,102.2 millimetres) annually. The wettest year was 1915, with 77.4 inches (1924.3 millimetres) and the driest year was 1907, with 42.2 inches (108.9 millimetres).
