Port Austin, Michigan is located on the north shore of Lake Michigan, about 45 minutes northeast of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and 75 minutes northwest of Detroit. The city is bordered on the north by the Coloma Township and the city of Harbor Springs, on the south by the City of Traverse City and the Township of Benzie, on the east by the Townships of Frissell and Williams and the City of Grand Haven on the west by the Village of Orono.

Port Austin is crossed by the Kalamazoo River, which forms the southern border of the city and flows into Lake Michigan. A narrow channel, now submerged, once separated the two bodies of water.

The city has a humid continental climate (Köppen "Dfa"), with long, cold winters and warm, sometimes hot, summers. Precipitation is moderate, falling mainly in the winter, and mostly as snow.

Historically, lumber and water transportation have been Port Austin's primary industries. These days, the city is a center for tourism, with shops, restaurants, and bars catering to visitors from near and far. Some of the attractions in or near Port Austin include the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Traverse City State Park, Harbor Springs State Park, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, the Kalamazoo Science Center, and the Museum of Art and History.
