Poestenkill, New York is a city located in the northwest corner of Dutchess County. The population was 7,694 at the 2010 census. The City of Poestenkill is surrounded by the Town of Poestenkill and the Village of Poestenkill. Poestenkill is at the junction of Routes 212 and 82, a major crossroads in the Hudson Valley.

Poestenkill is located at 42°24′56″N 73°15′17″W.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 square miles, of which, 3.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square mile is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,651 people, 2,502 households, and 1,703 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,611.8 people per square mile (625.2/km²). There were 2,876 housing units at an average density of 719.4 per square mile (278.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.24% White, 1.89% African American, 0.11% Native American, 2.33% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.05% of the population.

There were 2,502 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.05.
