Playas de Carmen is located in the state of Quintana Roo, in the south-eastern region of Mexico. The municipality covers an area of 5,281 km2 and has a population of 183,975. Playas de Carmen is bordered by the municipalities of Cozumel to the south, Benito Juárez to the east and the state of Yucatán to the north. The city is located 194 km south of Cancún and 7 km from the Gulf of Mexico. The nearest states are Tabasco to the south, Veracruz to the east and Colima to the north. The climate is tropical with a distinct dry season from November to April. Average annual rainfall is 1,480 mm. Temperature ranges from a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius in the summer to a minimum of 18 degrees Celsius in the winter. There is a pronounced difference in temperature between the north and south of the city. The south is cooler and more humid, while the north is hotter and drier.

The landscape is rugged with tall palm trees, tropical shrubs and dense vegetation. The municipal exploitation of the sea has left a series of long, sandy beaches, punctuated by crystal-clear turquoise waters. The municipality is principally composed of limestone cliffs, coral reefs and extensive underwater canyons and caves. The city is home to several ecological parks, including the Quintana Roo Tropical Botanical Garden, Parque Nacional Tulum and the Isla Mujeres Chichén Itzá.

As the sun sets, the sky slowly grows dark. For many people, this is a time to relax and wind down for the day. But have you ever wondered exactly when it gets dark? The answer may surprise you.

Did you know that darkness actually begins long before the sun sets? As the sun gets lower in the sky, its light has to travel through more atmosphere. This filters out some of the blue light, making the sun look redder. At the same time, shadows get longer and darker. So by the time the sun finally dips below the horizon, darkness has already begun to fall.

Of course, not all places on Earth experience darkness at the same time. Near the equator, the sun sets and rises almost directly overhead. This means that there is less of a difference between daytime and nighttime. Closer to the poles, however, the sun stays low in the sky for much of the year. This leads to longer periods of darkness during wintertime.
