Pinewood city is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It is located in the northeastern section of the San Francisco Bay Area, 25 miles (40 km) east of San Francisco, and 5 miles (8 km) west of Roseville. The population was 23,643 at the 2010 census. The town has a mix of rural and suburban living with a few small businesses and restaurants in the downtown area. Pinewood City is about 20 minutes from Pittsburg and about an hour from downtown San Francisco.

The town, started in 1899 as a tiny post town on the railroad line, was first known as Antioch. After a failed attempt to rename the town in 1917 after the famous British film studio, Pinewood, the town took its present name in 1923. The site of the original railroad station is now a park and the town's civic center.

Opened in 1905 as the first motion picture studio in the United States, the studio was bought by British filmmaking giantsCapital Films in 1928. In 1931, the studio was acquired by Columbia Pictures, which reorganized it as the Columbia Pictures Studio. The studio was nationalized by the U.S. government during World War II, and was used for production of training films and propaganda.

The studio's luck ran out in the late 1940s, and it ceased operations in 1951. The property was then sold to developers, and the last picture was filmed in 1957. The studio was demolished in 1969. The site is now a park and the town's civic center.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14.2 km2), of which, 5.2 square miles (13.9 km2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) of it (2.7%) is water.

The nearest cities are Pinole, 24 miles (39 km); Brentwood, 21 miles (33 km); and Hercules, 22 miles (35 km). The closest state capital is Sacramento, 52 miles (84 km). The nearest national capital is Washington, D.C., 241 miles (389 km).
