Well, it's a combination of things. The Earth's atmosphere scatters sunlight in every direction, but blue and violet light are scattered more than other colors. This is why the sky is usually blue during the daytime. As the sun gets lower in the sky, the atmosphere becomes thicker and more dense.
This scattering of sunlight happens to a greater extent, and we see red and orange light more than blue and violet light. That's why sunset is usually a beautiful red or orange color. So next time you see sunset, remember that you're actually seeing Earth rotate into darkness!
Piggott is a small city in Benton County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,059 at the 2010 census. Piggott is the county seat of Benton County. Piggott is located at (35.233805, -92.523505). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 km2 (0.6 sq mi), all of it land. Piggott is located adjacent to the Mississippi River, between the Memphis metropolitan area in Tennessee and Little Rock, Arkansas.
Piggott is the only incorporated town in Benton County. The city began as a train depot, and it still maintains the feel of a small railroad town. The downtown area contains several historic buildings, including the former depot, post office, and courthouse. There are also several businesses that cater to the railroad community, such as a railroad museum and a railroad repair shop.
Piggott experiences a humid subtropical climate (Köppen "Cfa"), with hot, humid summers and cold, damp winters. The temperature range is very narrow, typically never exceeding 36 °C (97 °F) during the summer months and rarely dipping below −5 °C (−21 °F) during the winter months. There are typically about 104 cm (40 in) of precipitation annually. July is the driest month, with about 56 cm (22 in) of precipitation. December is the wettest month, with about 123 cm (48 in) of precipitation.
The closest states are Missouri to the north, Arkansas to the east, and Tennessee to the south. The capital of Arkansas is Little Rock. The nearest major metropolitan area is Memphis, Tennessee. Interstate 40 is the main highway through Piggott, linking Memphis with Little Rock. The closest airport is Memphis Municipal Airport.
Piggott is served by the Piggott Independent School District.
Piggott was first settled by the Kiowa in the mid-nineteenth century. The town was initially named Piggott Junction, after the nearby Piggott Creek. The first settler was Lorenzo Dow Tilton, who built a house on the banks of the creek in 1881. The community received its present name in 1890, when the Southern Railway began operating a station here.
Piggott is the home of the Benton County Fair, one of the largest county fairs in the United States. The fairgrounds are located just north of the city limits.
Since the 1990s, Piggott has been a center of the tourist industry in Arkansas. The town is home to the Piggott Railroad Museum, which preserves and displays historical railroad artifacts. The Piggott Cotton Museum is also located in the city.
