Phoenix was founded in 1871 in an area that was part of Maricopa County, at the time a remote and sparsely populated area. The original name for the city was "Apache Junction", and it was chosen in honor of John C. Frémont, an American explorer who had explored Arizona in 1841. The city was incorporated as a municipal corporation on February 4, 1909. The city's original site was located near Scottsdale and Tempe, but a severe drought in the 1910s caused the migration of the population to the area now bounded by Van Buren Street, Central Avenue, Third Avenue and Jefferson Street. Once the area was developed and the population significantly increased, city leaders decided to relocate the municipal corporation to its present site in the city of Phoenix.
The area that is now Phoenix was first inhabited by the Hohokam, and by the time the area was surveyed by Robert Stuart in 1851, the Hohokam had disappeared. However, the area was used by the Pima, Maricopa, and Apache tribes. The first European to visit the area was John C. Frémont, who explored Arizona in 1841.
