Well, it's a combination of things. The Earth's atmosphere scatters sunlight in every direction, but blue and violet light are scattered more than other colors. This is why the sky is usually blue during the daytime. As the sun gets lower in the sky, the atmosphere becomes thicker and more dense.

Pell City is a city located in the northeastern corner of Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Winston County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,870. Pell City is located at 33°13′S 84°3′W / 33.216°S 84.063°W / 33.216; -84.063 (33.21646, -84.07873).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.5 km2), all of it land. Pell City is the only incorporated city in Winston County. Winston County was formed in 1901 from parts of DeKalb, Coffee, Limestone and Wilcox counties. Pell City was formally incorporated on January 31, 1902. Pell City is located in the northeastern corner of Alabama, about 50 miles northeast of Auburn, 75 miles northeast of Montgomery, 90 miles northeast of Birmingham, and 150 miles northeast of Atlanta. U.S. Route 72 parallels the Tennessee River from northeast to southwest through the city. Winston County is in the Appalachian Mountains, and the county seat is located on the high ground overlooking the wide valley of the Tallapoosa River. Pell City has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa). Winters are mild with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s F (2 to 3 °C) and lows in the upper teens to mid-20s F (-3 to -2 °C). Spring and fall are mild, while summer is hot, with temperatures in the upper 90s F (34 to 37 °C) and occasional low 100s F (38 to 39 °C). Severe weather is uncommon, but a tornado touched down in Pell City on June 1, 1968, and a severe thunderstorm early on July 16, 2003, causing widespread damage.
