Ossining, New York is located in the northern Hudson Valley, approximately south of Albany and north of New York City. The city has a population of approximately 30,000, and is situated at the foot of the Shawangunk Ridge. Ossining occupies a narrow strip of land on the West Branch of the Hudson River, opposite the borough of Peekskill. It is also adjacent to the town of Ardsley, and the villages of Greenburgh and Dobbs Ferry. Ossining is bisected by Ossining Avenue, which forms its main east-west artery. The city is largely composed of dense residential neighborhoods, although there are a few areas of commercial and industrial development. Ossining is known for its landscape of rolling hills and woodlands, its varicolored Victorian homes, and its many parks and gardens. The city is also home to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which is one of the United States' leading colleges of technology.
