The population of the City has grown steadily since 1920.

The economy of Ocracoke has been based primarily on tourism and the agricultural production of shellfish. The City is the commercial hub of the Outer Banks, serving as the gateway to the island and the source of supplies and services to the residents of the island. The City has an established infrastructure of businesses, services, and civic organizations whose presence has promoted the City's emergence as an important economic force on the Outer Banks. The City has preserved many of the features and charms of the early 1900s including its historic architecture and the traditional crafts and arts of the islanders.

Notable tourist attractions in Ocracoke include the Ocracoke Lighthouse and Museum, the Pee Dee River Maritime Museum, the Ocracoke National Wildlife Refuge, the Ft. Greene National Museum, the Ocracoke Heritage Museum, and the Islip Art Museum. The Ocracoke Lighthouse is situated on the tip of Long Point and is the oldest operational lighthouse in North Carolina. The Pee Dee River Maritime Museum is located on the north side of the sound and showcases the maritime history of the Outer Banks including the wreck of the SS Empress of Ireland. The Ft. Greene National Museum is situated on the south side of the sound and showcases the history of the U.S. Army on the Outer Banks. The Ocracoke Heritage Museum is located in the restored 1890s grocery store and includes displays on the island's history, culture, and natural resources. The Islip Art Museum is located in the restored 1890s post office and features a permanent collection of American and international art.
