Norvelt was founded in 1902, and named for settler Frederick R. Norvelt. The town was served by the Norvelt Post Office from 1902 until it closed in 1983. Norvelt is located near the junction of U.S. Highway 189 and Territorial Road 287 and is within walking distance of the Norvelt-Laramie County School District.

Norvelt has a warm-summer continental climate, with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. Precipitation is concentrated in the fall and spring, while winter snowfall is not unusual.
