The city lies in a narrow valley on the eastern escarpment of the Rocky Mountains, at an elevation of 3,000 feet. The metropolitan area covers approximately 18 square miles and has a population of about 12,000 people. Newfields' overall climate is mild, but the city experiences a wide range of weather conditions that includes precipitation, temperatures from −12 degrees F to 108 degrees F, and significant humidity levels throughout the year. The city is the principal city in a micropolitan area that includes the villages of Carter, Friendship, and Oakland. Newfields is home to an international central university, Dwight O. (John) Hines College, as well as Southern Iowa Central Community College. The city is also home to the Newfields Opera House, a performing arts center, which was built in 1910.
