Newfields' overall climate is mild, but the city experiences a wide range of weather conditions that includes precipitation, temperatures from −12 degrees F to 108 degrees F, and significant humidity levels throughout the year. The city is the principal city in a micropolitan area that includes the villages of Carter, Friendship, and Oakland. Newfields is home to an international central university, Dwight O.
