New Ulm has a pleasantly temperate climate that is moderated by its location near the Mississippi River. Winters are typically mild and winters can occasionally experience cold snaps, but the city usually receives about fifty inches of rainfall annually. Summers can be hot and humid, but usually there are only a few days where the mercury tops triple digits.
New Ulm is home to the University of Minnesota-New Ulm, one of the state’s largest public universities. The school was founded in 1957 and is currently home to over 4,500 students.
The city is also home to The New Ulm STAR Center, a Drug Abuse Resistance Education and training center. The STAR Center is a crucial resource for the city’s residents, as well as law enforcement and other community groups.
The area that makes up present-day New Ulm was first settled in the 1800s by German immigrants. The city got its current name in 1852, when the railroad came through the area and was renamed for the city in Germany famed for its furniture making industry.
Over the years, New Ulm has grown to become one of the most diverse cities in Minnesota. The city is home to a large population of Somali immigrants, as well as those of Scandinavian, Irish, and English ancestry.
According to the 2010 US Census, the population of New Ulm was 44,136. This makes the city the eighth largest in Minnesota, and the 116th largest city in the United States. The population is evenly distributed between male and female, with about half of the population between the ages of 18 and 64.
