Located in southeastern Los Angeles County, Neavitt City is a small, unincorporated community bounded by the cities of Downey to the east, Maywood to the south and southeast, and Bell to the west. With a population of 9,181 as of the 2010 census, it is one of the smallest incorporated municipalities in Los Angeles County.
The city is named for Abner Neavitt, an early California settler and vice president of the Pacific Railroad. The town of Neavitt City was established on December 14, 1921, when the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved an incorporation petition signed by residents of Downey, Maywood, and Bell.
The city is located in the San Gabriel Valley, in southeastern Los Angeles County, approximately north of downtown Los Angeles. The San Gabriel Mountains loom to the north, the Whittier Narrows National Wildlife Refuge marks the eastern corner of the city, and southeast Los Angeles is visible in the distance. The population density is low for the county, at less than 1,000 people per square mile. The city is mostly residential, with smaller businesses and industrial areas scattered throughout the area.
Neavitt City experiences a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with temperatures reaching the high 90s during the summer months. Winters are mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below the low 30s. Annual rainfall is around 50 inches, with roughly 60 percent of that occurring between November and April.
