Nashwauk is located at 44°21′00″N 99°46′00″W. It is bordered to the east by the town of Bemidji and to the west by the towns of Madelia and Nashwauk Township. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.12 square miles, all of it land.

Nashwauk has a humid continental climate, with warm, long summers and bitterly cold winters. Precipitation is generally light, with the most significant rainfalls in the summer.

There is no evidence that suggests a site in what is now Nashwauk was ever occupied by humans. The first written record of the area was in 1876, when a surveyor for the Northern Pacific Railroad crossed the land with a set of north-south lines. In 1894, the town of Nashwauk was platted by George Nash, owner of a sawmill and railroad depot. Nashwauk was officially incorporated as a city in 1903.

Today, Nashwauk is a bustling city with a population of 1,912. The city is home to several businesses and institutions, including the Nashwauk High School and the Nashwauk Community Hospital. Nashwauk is also home to several recreational opportunities, including a pool, tennis courts, and a playground.
