Murphy, one of the state's early railroad commissioners. Murphy is bordered on the north by Pawnee County and on the east by Canadian County. It lies in the Tulsa metropolitan area and is the county seat of Tulsa County. The city is near the intersection of I-40 and I-49. The city lies in the Arkansas River Valley.

The city of Murphy is located in eastern Oklahoma at the intersection of Interstate 40 and Interstate 49. It is bordered to the north by Pawnee County and to the east by Canadian County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 47.2 square miles (121.5 km²), of which, 43.1 square miles (109.9 km²) of it is land and 2.7 square miles (7.0 km²) of it (8.03%) is water.

Murphy has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. Summers are typically hot and humid, while winters are mild, but windy.

As of the census of 2000, there were 102,445 people, 41,712 households, and 28,463 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,875.4 people per square mile (753.2/km²). There were 43,556 housing units at an average density of 762.2 per square mile (293.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 62.59% White, 28.25% African American, 0.57% Native American, 2.49% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 2.77% from two or more races
