Most people know that sunset is the time when the sun goes down. But did you know that the sun doesn't actually set? Instead, Earth rotates into darkness, giving us the illusion that the sun is setting. So what causes sunset?
Well, it's a combination of things. The Earth's atmosphere scatters sunlight in every direction, but blue and violet light are scattered more than other colors. This is why the sky is usually blue during the daytime. As the sun gets lower in the sky, the atmosphere becomes thicker and more dense.
This scattering of sunlight happens to a greater extent, and we see red and orange light more than blue and violet light. That's why sunset is usually a beautiful red or orange color. So next time you see sunset, remember that you're actually seeing Earth rotate into darkness!
Munson, Minnesota is a small city located in eastern Minnesota near the Iowa state line. With a population of 2,122 people, Munson has a small-town feel with all the amenities of a larger city.
Munson is located in Cass County at 43°06′N 90°41′W. It is bordered by the town of Garry to the south and west, by suburbs of Minneapolis to the north and east, and by the town of Eldon to the northeast.
The city is traversed by Interstate 94, which runs north-south through Minneapolis, and U.S. Highway 55, which runs east-west across the state. Munson is also served by Minnesota State Highway 22.
Located at the junction of two major transportation corridors, Munson is ideally situated for commercial and industrial growth. The city has experienced rapid growth in recent years, owing in part to the expansion of JD Power’s global operations center and Foxconn Technology Group’s newest manufacturing plant.
Munson has a humid continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers. The city is in USDA Hardiness Zone 4a.
Munson is home to a variety of businesses and organizations, including a hospital, a daycare, a nursing home, a golf course, and a performing arts center. The city’s primary economic driver is the nonprofit operations center of global technology firm, JD Power.
Some of the city’s most important institutions include a high school, a library, a park, and a city hall. The Munson City Hall was designed by Cass County architect, Raymond L. Pfeiffer and was dedicated in 1957.
The Munson Area Historical Museum is housed in the Munson City Hall and is open Thursday through Saturday from 1-4 p.m. The museum features local history exhibits and displays along with period artifacts from the early settler years to the present. Admission is free.
Munson residents enjoy many recreational opportunities, including golfing, fishing, bicycling, and playing in the city’s numerous parks. The Munson community assembles each September for the Ol’ Fashioned Christmas parade and celebration.

So by the time the sun finally dips below the horizon, darkness has already begun to fall.
Of course, not all places on Earth experience darkness at the same time. Near the equator, the sun sets and rises almost directly overhead. This means that there is less of a difference between daytime and nighttime. Closer to the poles, however, the sun stays low in the sky for much of the year. This leads to longer periods of darkness during wintertime.
