When Antiope found out she was pregnant, she afraid of what his reaction would be and ran away from home. Zeus found her and took her back to Olympus, where she gave birth to Ida.

The first white settlers in the area were the husband and wife team of Isham and Martha Robertson. They moved to the area in 1807. In 1824, John Sevier, the first Governor of Tennessee, bought a tract of land in the area and established the town of Ida. The town grew slowly, however, and by 1848, it had only a population of 195.

In 1854, the railroad was built through the area and the town began to grow rapidly. In 1875, the town was designated the county seat of Montgomery County. During the early part of the 20th century, Mount Ida was aswing town, with a significant African American population.

Today, Mount Ida is a thriving city with a population of 15,165. it is home to the Mount Ida College and the Montgomery County Courthouse.
