Moores Hill is in the James River Valley, and is at an elevation of 352 feet. The city has a temperate climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers.

Moores Hill was established in 1796 by Richard Pearis. The city is named for Pearis's grandson, Judge Richard Pearis.

The economy of Moores Hill is primarily based on agriculture. The major crops grown in the area are tobacco, corn, and wheat.
