Montour Falls is at the heart of the Laurel Highlands and is surrounded by several thousand acres of protected wilderness. The city is at an elevation of above sea level and experiences a humid continental climate.

The city has a population of about 6,000 and is the principal town in the Laurel Highlands region. It is served by the Montour Falls Area Junior/Senior High School and by the Montour Falls branch of the Tioga County Public Library.

The nearest states are New York to the east and Pennsylvania to the west. The capital of Pennsylvania is Harrisburg. The nearest major metropolitan area is Buffalo, about to the east.

Montour Falls is crossed by U.S. Route 219, Pennsylvania Route 291, and Pennsylvania Route 426. These highways provide access to the city from the east, south, and west.
