Minot Afb (MOT-ənɛt, -əfr) is a city in Ward County, North Dakota, United States. The city is the county seat of Ward County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,452. Minot is the principal city of the Minot Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city is also the home of Fort Abraham Lincoln National Monument. Located just east of the Belle Fourche River, the city was founded in 1880 by the Northern Pacific Railroad as a stop on its transcontinental line. The railroad company provided the bulk of the city's initial development, although other businesses and organizations have since expanded its reach. In October 1919, during World War I, a violent explosion destroyed the city's power plant, cutting off much of the city's electric lights. The lightless conditions were a contributing factor in the city's subsequent decline. Today, the city is a center of agricultural production, with several companies raising livestock. The city is also home to the University of North Dakota and its athletic teams, as well as a number of museums and other tourist destinations.
