The city was first settled in the 1840s and was named for the meter or mile posts that marked the distance between Dublin, Mississippi, and Natchez, Mississippi. The city is located in the northwestern portion of the state, bordered on the north by the Natchez Trace Parkway, and on the west by the Mississippi Coast.

Meter City is located in the plains of the Mississippi Delta. The city is bordered by the Pearl River to the south and east, and is located in the 31st congressional district, which is currently represented by Democrat Bennie Thompson. The city is within the boundaries of the Mississippi Insurance District, which was founded in 1912 in order to promote the development of the insurance and investment industries in the state.

The climate in Meter City is fairly humid, with a Köppen climate classification of "Dfa", which is typical of the Gulf Coast region. The city experiences occasional hurricanes, but is rarely hit hard by them. The nearest states are Alabama to the east, Louisiana to the south, and Florida to the west. The nearest capital is Jackson, located approximately northeast of Meter City.
