Mentcle City is located in the state of Kentucky, in the southeastern region of the United States. The city is bordered by the states of Tennessee to the south, Alabama to the southwest, and Indiana to the west. The capital of Kentucky is Frankfort. Mentcle City is the eighth-largest city in Kentucky and the 121st-largest city in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 55,135.

Mentcle City is at the junction of four major interstate highways, the interstates 75 and 79, which run north-south, and the interstates 476 and 275, which run east-west. The city is also served by the Kentucky International Convention Center, Kentucky State University (formerly Kentucky State College), and the Kentucky Horse Park. Important landmarks in Mentcle City include the Kentucky Palace, the municipally owned Lexington Herald-Leader Building, John Glenn International Space Center, and the historic Commerce Tower.

The city has a humid subtropical climate, with long, hot summers and mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Mentcle City has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.

As of the census of 2010, the city population was 55,135. The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.4% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.4% from some other race and 2.5% from two or more races. Latino/Hispanic population was 4.2%.

According to the Greater Lexington-Fayette Urban County Population Estimates of 2007-2011, the population of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County was 527,473. The Lexington-Fayette Urban County is the 15th largest urban county in the United States.

The median age in the city was 33.9 years. 43.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 10.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 21.9% were from 25 to 44; 24.3% were from 45 to 64; and 9.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.6% male and 52.4% female.

As of the census of 2000, there were 49,566 people, 19,205 households, and 13,604 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,843.4 people per square mile (717.2/km²).
