The total land area is 13.9 square miles, with a population of 11,951 as of the 2010 census. Mellenville experiences a humid continental climate, with winter temperatures typically below freezing and summers that are typically quite hot and humid. The average yearly precipitation is 37.3 inches, and there is a fair amount of snowfall, averaging about 10 inches annually.

One of the main attractions of Mellenville is the Mellenville Green, a large open greenspace with a playground, picnic tables, and a small lake.
