Mc Dermott is also the most diverse city in Williamson County, with a population composed of 70% of whites, 12% of Hispanics, 9% of blacks, and 5% of Asians.
The city was established in 1881 on the eastern bank of the Colorado River, across from the town of Milano, and was originally called Riverton. The city was officially renamed Mc Dermott in 1886 in honor of Judge Mc Dermott, a local rancher, banker, and politician. The city's early economy was based on agriculture and processing of cotton, cattle, and wool; however, the industry that has shaped the city most significantly through the years is oil and gas.
